Together Everyone Achieves More
Croeso i Flwyddyn 1!
Keep your eyes peeled for exciting ways to support your children in their learning.
Beth dym ni'n dysgu? / What are we learning about?
Our learning context in Summer 1 2018 is 'Growing Things'
We are learning all about how things grow! We had a class discussion about what we'd like to learn, and lots of us wanted to learn about flowers and grow some of our own. Others wanted to learn about how different types of creatures, like bees, tigers and butterflies, grow! Some children also said they'd like to read the story "Jack and the Beanstalk".
We will learn all about bees and how important they are to our ecosystem, and about how lately they have been having a hard time! Then we will learn about how flowers grow before creating our very own bee garden.
We will focus on story writing in Literacy, and use Jack and the Beanstalk to first help us build our story writing skills and then inspire us to write our very own versions!
P.E will take place on Tuesday (Outdoors). We will also be spending a lot of time actively learning outside this term (hopefully enjoying the good weather!)
You should have all received a letter confirming the day that we change your child's reading book. However, to help them to progress as much as possible, we try to read more than once a week with them. Therefore, please send in your child's book EVERY DAY.
Our spelling bee will be on Monday 23rd April. We will see how many of the high-frequency words we learned last term we have remembered!
After that we will move on to spellings using patterns. Words that match the patterns will be sent home every week on a Monday, and tested the following Monday.
Here are the patterns we will need to learn each week this half term:
|Monday 23rd April - Monday 30th April||ff, ll, ss, zz and ck|
|Monday 30th April - Tuesday 8th May||-nk|
|Monday 7th May - Monday 14th May||Splitting words into syllables|
|Monday 14th May - Monday 21st May||-tch|
|Monday 21st May - Monday 4th June||/v/ sound at the end of words (e.g. give) and adding s and -es to words|
We practise saying, hearing and using our sounds within words and sentences. Here are some useful games to help you practise at home.

It is essential that you read with your child on a daily basis. We would encourage you to practise reading their key words along with their reading books.
Please ensure that these are brought to school, along with your child's reading diary everyday. As well as reading key word cards and books at home.
It is also important that you ask questions about the texts that are being read in order to develop their comprehension skills.
Spellings are assessed weekly with your child on the same day that we change their reading books. These assessments are done on a one-to-one basis.
It would be beneficial for your children to practise writing these words within full sentences to enhance their writing skills. Remember to start each sentence with a capital letter and finish with a full stop.
Physical movement time is on a Monday and Tuesday. Full P.E. kit is expected to be brought to school every Monday morning and will then be returned each Friday for washing.
Children are encouraged to drink water throughout the day. Please ensure that your child comes to school with a full bottle each day.
We are promoting healthy eating here at All Saints' and therefore encourage a healthy snack to be brought to school for playtime. Fruit can be purchased from the hall on a daily basis, at the cost of 25p per day.
Homework is a vital part of our learning in Year One. All children have now been given a blue homework book which will go home every fortnight on a Tuesday.
